The resulting seeds have genes from both the mother and father plants, so it has a 50% possibility of being female or male. This is why you need to find a way to get your seeds by using just female plants, completely getting rid of male genes, which only leaves the possibility for female seeds.

Many growers know that if you stress out cannabis plants, they can easily become hermaphoridtes (a plant with both male and female sex organs) which end up creating male flowers that create pollen which then “impregnates” the plant and others around it. The issue with stress-caused hermaphrodite plants is that most of the resulting seeds tend to be hermaphrodites too, so it’s not the best method to use and it also stresses your plants out quite a lot.

In order to turn a female plant male without stressing it out, all you need is some Silver Thiosulfate, also known as STS. If you apply STS to female plants it will modify their ethylene levels, which is the hormone in charge of determining the sex of certain plants. This causes female plants to change sex and turn into males without the disadvantage of male genes.

Silver Thiosulfate

Making your own STS only takes about 15 to 20 minutes and you’ll need two ingredients: Sodium Thiosulphate and Silver Nitrate, both of which can easily be found in any pharmacy and on our webstore. Sodium Thiosulfate is a neutral chemical salt that’s used to reduce side-effects in some cancer treatments and can easily be bought without a prescription.

How to Feminize Seeds | Making STS

Caution:

You’ll need protective material such as gloves, safety glasses and a face mask; STS can be quite toxic when inhaled and it can leave large burns on the skin. Make sure you don’t use any metallic objects when making STS – everything should be plastic, as metal can alter the composition and reduce efficiency.

Process:

Do not use metal instruments or tools in this process. The first thing you’ll need to do is grab a plastic cup and pour in 20ml of distilled water. Next, depending on your chosen method, get either 7 Argenpal sticks or 0.35g silver nitrate. If working with Argenplal, dilute the tips delicately in the water (the tip is where the silver nitrate is). Grab another plastic cup and add 30ml distilled water and 1.3g of sodium thiosulfate, mixing it slowly until it’s fully dissolved. Then, mix the contents of both glasses and mix slowly again – make sure to use a plastic spoon, no metal.

The result is 50ml of pure Silver Thiosulfate, much too potent to use on your plants, so you’ll need to water it down a bit. Add your Silver Thiosulfate to 400ml of distilled water, so you’ll have around 450ml of STS. Make sure to shake quite a lot until it’s completely mixed. It’s still much too concentrated to apply straight onto your plants; take 100ml of the mixture you just made and add it to 400ml mor of distilled water. You now have 500ml of a usable STS mixture that’s ready to be used on your plants.

Recommendation:

For maximum efficiency you’ll need to use it the same day you make it. If stored in a dark, cool space it can last up to 15 days but each day it’ll be a bit less potent. If you have it for over a week and haven’t used it we recommend making another batch if you want the best possible results.

How to Feminize Seeds | How to use STS

STS is used by spraying it on your plants leaves, making sure that it’s entirely covered and dripping. We recommend taking the plant away from your growing area before beginning the process, or the mixture might end up getting on your other plants too. You’ll need to begin applying it 4 or 5 days after flipping the lights, right before your lights go off. This allows you to spray the plant without worrying about the light burning your plants. After 10 days, you need to respray your plants, using the same process, covering the plant in the mixture and letting it soak in in the dark.

The sprayed plant will begin growing male flowers with pollen with can then be used to pollinate whichever plant you want, causing seeds to appear that have absolutely no male genes in them. You can use the pollinated plant in order to make extracts from its resin; the amount of seeds it’ll produce will render it pretty much useless in as far as smokeable flowers. The plant that you’ve applied the STS to will need to be thrown away, as it’s much too toxic to do anything with and if you consume any of it, even its resin, you could run in to some health issues.

When should you polinate your plants?

In order to efficiently pollinate select plants, we recommend having two completely separate grow rooms or areas to work in. One should be for the plants that you’re planning on switching to male in order to obtain female polen; the other should be specifically for the plants that you plan on pollinating once you’ve reverted the other ones.

When using the pollen that you’ve collected from your reverted plants, you need to make sure that the plant that you plan on using it on is fully ready for it; this can depend on the strain you’re growing. The right time to begin applying feminized pollen is actually right when your plants begin to flow real flowers.

You generally want to use the pollen as fresh as possible on a plant that is fully ready to take it on, or else it simply might not work – it’s kind of like people, in that sense. Certain things need to be just right. To harvest large amounts of high quality seeds, you’re probably better off doing a few tests in order to find out when the right moment is. You can do this by testing it out on the same strain before going big.

How to Feminize Seeds | Make your own strains

When making your own seeds you can combine your favorite strains, resulting in a plant that you’ve created yourself that is 100% feminized. Indeed, the advent of feminized seeds brought about a genuine revolution within the cannabis sector. Growers were now sure that all their plants would be females, without the need to differentiate between male and female plants or having to remove the males before they could ruin the crops, which offers a number of benefits of significant importance:

  • Space and resources saving: no more growing plants which eventually will be removed for being males.
  • Reliability: it’s not that most plants are female, or that they are genetically more likely to produce female plants. The plants grown from feminized seeds have only female chromosomes (XX), therefore this method is 99% reliable.

It is not surprising, therefore, that at present, feminized seeds represent virtually all the seeds in the market, since they offer a number of significant advantages for both professional and home growers and breeders, for photoperiod and autoflowering plants. The main disadvantage of this method is a well known and hotly debated issue: the growers who buy this type of seeds cannot produce their own seeds in the absence of male plants, so the only way they can manage it it’s using the same process to obtain this type of seeds. But. what are these processes and what are they based on?

Female crosses: feminised cannabis seeds are born

As we’ve already mentioned, feminized seeds are the result of a process that reverses the sex of a female plant, that is, she is forced to produce male flowers. This way, and once into flowering, the female chosen will start to develop what we know as male flowers (stamens and anthers), which, just like male plants, will release the pollen that will pollinate the female plants. What is then the difference between a male plant and a reverted female plant?

The sex of cannabis plants is determined in the same way as ours, through the so-called sex chromosomes or genosomes. Male plants have a couple of different sex chromosomes called “XY” or heterogametic, while female plants have two chromosomes called “XX” or homogametic. When crossing a male (XY) with a female (XX), we will obtain around half of the plants of each type in their offspring. In other words, when a breeder uses a male and a female plant, the seeds produced by them will be approximately 50% males and 50% females.

After this explanation, many of you will have already figured out that if we cross two female plants (reversing the sex of one of them to force it to produce pollen), the result will be seeds that will produce female plants, as there are only female sex chromosomes in the equation. If crossing XY with XX produced 50% of each class (male and female), crossing XX with XX will produce plants that only exhibit chromosomes XX, that is to say, female plants. No matter how many times we “transform” a female plant into a male plant, we won´t be changing their genetic composition, which will still be female or XX. This way, the pollen produced by this plant will pass down female sex chromosomes exclusively.

As you can see, and although we normally use the expression “reversing the plant sex“, that is not exactly what is done, because the sex chromosomes of the female plant (XX) have not changed, even if we managed to produce male flowers. This “sex change” of female plants can be achieved in a number of ways, but usually with the same goal: to reduce the level of ethylene in plant tissues and/or inhibit the ethylene action, which makes the plant develop male flowers on entering the flowering period, as if it were a male from regular seeds. This is because ethylene is a natural regulator of the sex expression in plants!

Let’s see now the most popular ways to reverse the sex of a female plant in order to produce feminized seeds.

Methods used to produce feminized cannabis seeds

There are several ways to secure that a female plant produces pollen, and almost all of them require some type of chemical that is often sprayed on the plant. Once sprinkled with the chosen product and under a flowering photoperiod, the plant will flower normally, but as a male instead of female, producing ‘feminized’ pollen (which only contains chromosomes XX) that can be used to pollinate other females in order to produce seeds. These are some of the most commonly used techniques:

Stress or rodelization

One of the first methods used to obtain seeds that produce female plants was stress or rodelization. There are several ways to stress the cannabis plants to make sure they develop male flowers, such as through temperature, nutrition, photoperiod, and pH. However, supporters of this technique often prefer something as simple as delaying the harvest 2-3 weeks in order to force the plants to develop a few male flowers without stressing them as much as with any of the other methods we have mentioned.

Although this action will produce far less pollen than other techniques like STS, it will be enough to obtain a handful of seeds for the domestic growers to try to create their own feminized crosses. Also, the great advantage of this technique is that is 100% natural, and it doesn´t use any chemicals. It is an excellent alternative for anyone who just wants a few seeds and wishes to keep it simple without any formulas or laboratory products. However, bear in mind that this is the only method listed in this post that may produce some plants with hermaphroditic traits.

STS or silver thiosulfate solution

Without any doubt, one of the most commonly used methods for both producers and seed banks. This is a solution made of distilled water, silver nitrate and sodium thiosulphate (sometimes called sodium hyposulphite) that, after being sprayed on the female plants, inhibits their ethylene action resulting in the formation of male flowers once flowering has been induced. STS is relatively easy to prepare, although its lifespan after combining the two components is quite limited, barely a few days as long as it´s well preserved (in a dark and cool place).

It is important to mention that you must not consume any part of the plants sprayed with this type of product, although that would be weird, as the plants have “become” males and won´t produce any buds. Nevertheless, you shouldn’t use the reverted plants to make resin extracts; the best thing is to discard them after harvesting the pollen. Both components, sodium thiosulphate and silver nitrate, are also used for photo-development.

Colloidal silver

This is another way to revert the sex of the plants, but this time using a solution made of 30ppm colloidal silver (that you can easily find in many pharmacies and also online) and distilled water. The solution must be applied for a few days until the plant starts producing male flowers, something that it´s not necessary with STS, where in most cases one single application is enough.

Colloidal silver is formed by electrically charged silver nanoparticles and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. This product was introduced in the market in 1980 for therapeutic use. However, as with STS, you should get rid of the sprayed plants once their pollen is harvested, as colloidal silver is absorbed systemically by the plant and remains in its tissues.

Silver nitrate

This is a method researched by Mohan Ram, who also conducted extensive investigations on plant sex reversal with STS. According to his findings, sodium thiosulphate (STS) is more effective in producing male flowers and viable pollen in female plants. Probably because of this, silver nitrate is mixed with sodium thiosulphate, instead of using it in isolation.

Gibberellic acid

Gibberellins are plant hormones that help regulate various processes related to the development of the plants. There are several types of gibberellins available in the market, although the most common and effective is gibberellic acid or GA3 (Gibberellin GA3). This product is used in a very similar way to colloidal silver, sprayed on the plants during several days before switching the photoperiod over to flowering.

It is worth stating that one of the side effects of gibberellic acid is a significant stretching of the treated parts of the plant, so don’t be surprised if this happens to your plants! The recommended dose to achieve the best results is approximately 100ppm.

Urban legends and lies about feminized seeds

Despite the fact that, after two decades of cannabis cultivation, many of the false myths surrounding feminized seeds have been debunked, from time to time we still hear some arguments like the ones shown below. As is often the case, many of these stories are spread by people who have never grown this type of seeds or have none or very limited experience with them. Ignorance is always a bad thing, and that’s why we want to emphasize several points in relation to feminized seeds and the myths that often go with them; myths such as the following:

Feminized seeds produce hermaphrodite plants:

The problem with monoecious hermaphrodite plants has more to do with the parents used (and if they exhibit any hermaphrodite trait) rather than with the type of seeds produced. If to create a feminized seed you use a female plant with a tendency to produce male flowers, part of its offspring will likely inherit that characteristic, whether the said female plant is used as a pollen donor (after reversing its sex) or as a recipient of pollen (letting it flowering as usual). Yet the same thing happens when producing regular seeds: if the male or female parents are not stable in this respect, neither will be their offspring (or at least part of it).

Marijuana and hermaphroditism

Many growers have been surprised by the presence of hermaphrodite plants in their marijuana crops. In this post we will tell you how to detect them and how to proceed if you find a hermaphrodite cannabis plant in your growing space. We will also discuss the causes of this hermaphroditism.

Feminized seeds produce mutant plants:

Nothing could be further from the truth. It is true that sometimes some plants develop weird traits or mutations, although this also happens with regular seeds. Unfortunately, there seems to be not enough studies comparing the ratio of specimens with mutations of one or other type of seeds; however, given the millions of feminized seeds that have been germinated in the last 20 years, if mutations would pose a problem, the quantity of feminized seeds sold would certainly not be so high, and this would be a “public security” issue within the cannabis sector, both for the growers and the producers of the seeds.

Feminized seeds have chemicals:

This is another lie that some people believe. As it’s been mentioned before, a female plant is sprayed with some chemicals in order to inhibit its ethylene action. After a few weeks of this and once in the flowering period, the plant will produce male flowers and pollen, which will be harvested to pollinate the female plants designated to produce seeds. Once the seeds are formed, they are collected and packed immediately, so they don’t come into contact with any chemicals or the plants that produce seeds, nor, of course, with the seeds themselves. Also, to produce cannabis seeds, you normally need two separated indoor cultivation areas, one for the reverted plants (treated females) and the other for the females to be fertilized to produce the seeds, so the latter can’t get “contaminated” with any chemicals.

Feminized seeds are GMOs:

Once again, this is a false statement. We have already pointed out that by using these sex reversal techniques we inhibit the ethylene action in the female plant, and under no circumstances the seeds (or plants) are genetically modified. The sex chromosomes of the female plant converted into a male plant are still female (XX), nothing has changed at a genetic level.

Male cannabis plants produce male seeds and pollen sacs and have much lower potency than females. For that reason, most people involved in cannabis cultivation want to grow female cannabis plants. Females produce the much sought-after buds that cannabis is harvested for. They’re high in cannabinoids and terpenes and have all the trichomes and other components you need for medical or recreational cannabis use.

Why Make Feminized Cannabis Seeds?

As opposed to regular cannabis seeds, which produce female plants approximately half of the time, feminized seeds only produce females. That means every plant grown from feminized cannabis seeds will be a female, bud-bearing beauty.

Growing cannabis plants from feminized marijuana seeds takes the guesswork out of the gender game and guarantees your plants will be female.

How Do You Make Feminized Cannabis Seeds?

There are two main ways to achieve this:

1. Chemically-induced pollen feminization

Of these two options, it’s far better to go chemically-induced. This method is used by professionals and has a significantly higher success rate. It also has a much lower frustration rate than the latter method. Rodelization creates feminized seeds through stress and, as such, can be a risky endeavour that increases the likelihood of hermaphrodite plants – and you don’t want hermie plants.

So how do you feminize cannabis seeds with chemicals? There are several techniques and chemicals that you can use. The main ones are Colloidal silver, silver nitrate, silver thiosulphate, benzothiadiazole, and gibberellic acid. Of these options, colloidal silver is the easiest to get a hold of, but you can also make it yourself without too much difficulty.

Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is a solution comprising tiny – microscopic particles of silver suspended in distilled water. It’s sometimes used as a dietary supplement, meaning it’s reasonably easy to get a hold of. You can buy it on Amazon or from health shops. Disclaimer: Never ingest colloidal silver as a dietary supplement without speaking to your doctor beforehand.

Colloidal silver has other uses in horticulture, including as a means of fungal control. In creating feminized cannabis seeds, colloidal silver works by inhibiting the production of ethylene, a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas. Ethylene is a hormone needed to produce female flowers, so we use colloidal silver to prevent ethylene from effectively making plants female. The result is that the male hormones dominate, producing male flowers. Afterwards, you collect the pollen from the plant and use it for pollinating other plants, producing feminized seeds. Colloidal silver guarantees you consistently get feminized seeds.

The Colloidal Silver Method: Step by Step

  • Begin by acquiring the right strength of colloidal silver, preferably 30ppm (ppm meaning parts per million). It’s available in other concentrations, and 30ppm seems to be the best for the job. Lower than 15ppm will result in male sacs with next to no viable pollen, so go with a higher concentration.
  • Select a plant that has the traits you wish to preserve. Put it into a small pot away from your grow room and give it a day or two to adapt, then put it on a 12/12 light cycle as soon as possible. If using a clone, you’re good, but if you’re growing a plant from seed, wait until the plant has sexed before treating it with colloidal silver. You need to make sure it’s female!
  • Once it begins the flowering stage, spray the plant, or plants, three times a day with colloidal silver, giving them a good soaking. Repeat this process over two weeks, and then leave them to grow as usual.
  • When sexing begins, your plant will develop sex organs – look for male pollen sacs on the bud sites rather than the calyxes and pistils seen in female plants. Look for little green balls appearing first at the top and then lower down the plant. Viable pollen appears within three to four weeks once the plant has been sexed. Collect the pollen and use it to pollinate other female plants. These plants will then yield feminized seeds.
  • Keep your treated plant isolated well away from females. If a pollen sac should burst, it will release millions of spores, and you don’t want them near your girls.

As soon as you’ve collected the pollen, discard the plants. Do not smoke them, and do not be tempted to try and rinse the colloidal silver off. Silver is a toxic metal, so never smoke the plant. Colloidal silver is absorbed into the plant’s foliage, and that plant is no longer fit for consumption. Toss it in the trash immediately.
